'Justice denied' by police not reporting crimes

"Victims are failed" and "justice is denied" by the police failing to record crimes, chief inspector of constabulary Tom Winsor has said.

His comments come as a new report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) suggests a fifth of crimes in England and Wales could be going unrecorded by police.

Mr Winsor told the Today programme that this could lead to crime detection rates being "artificially high".

Jeff Farrar, chief constable of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), agreed that there were areas of "serious concern", but added that there are also lots of examples of the "excellent work" officers undertake across the country.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Thursday 1 May.
