Glasgow: River holds key to city's fortune

The River Clyde has traditionally been the source of Glasgow's industry and fortune.

The world's first commercial steamship, the Comet, was launched on the river in 1812 and secured the city's reputation for excellence in shipbuilding,

The industry replaced cotton as the city's main employer - in 1861 Clydebank did not exist, by 1901 over 30,000 people called it home,

Glasgow remained a shipping powerhouse until the rapid industrial decline of the 1970s and 1980s.

Now the river is central to the 21st Century reinvention of Glasgow as people find employment in the tourism industry.
