Cliff Richard house raid: Police 'naive' over BBC coverage

The chief constable of South Yorkshire Police has said the BBC put his force in "a very difficult position" over a planned search of Sir Cliff Richard's home.

Police and the BBC were criticised after the corporation sent cameras to the singer's Berkshire property on August 14, as officers arrived to investigate a sexual assault allegation.

David Crompton said police gave prior notice of the raid in order to dissuade the corporation from publishing details about the investigation, leaked by a source at the Metropolitan Police's Operation Yewtree.

When questioned by Lorraine Fullbrook of the Home Affairs Select Committee, Mr Crompton admitted police had been "a little naive" in their dealings with the BBC.
