Egyptian coffin sells at auction for £12,000

An ancient Egyptian sarcophagus lid found during a house clearing in Bradwell-on-Sea, Essex has fetched £12,000 at auction.

The top of the coffin, believed to be about 3,000 years old, sold for 12 times its lower estimate in Cambridgeshire.

The Egyptian embassy had called for the coffin to be withdrawn from sale and returned to its country of origin.

Waseem Mirza reports.
