Osborne: 'Manchester mayor to redress UK imbalance'

Chancellor George Osborne has announced that Greater Manchester is to have an elected mayor to preside over regional issues.

The move, agreed with leaders of the region's 10 councils, will give local politicians greater control over billions of pounds of public money.

The mayor will oversee policies such as transport, social care and housing.

Mr Osborne told BBC Breakfast that the plan is "one of the biggest changes to civic governance in our country's history".
