Chief of the Defence Staff: 'Main Afghanistan mission achieved'

Gen Sir Nicholas Houghton, Chief of the Defence Staff, has said the streets of the UK are safer as a result of Britain's work in Afghanistan.

"There's a genuine sense that the primary mission [in Afghanistan] has been achieved, and that we're leaving a country with a legacy of significant hope," he added.

Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show, he said there was heightened security on Remembrance Sunday, but insisted that people must get on with their lives despite the terror threat.
