'Death of PC Neil Doyle is a sad day for Merseyside Police'

Merseyside Police Chief Constable Sir Jon Murphy has paid tribute to PC Neil Doyle who died after he and two colleagues were assaulted in Liverpool city centre.

PC Doyle, 36, was taken to hospital following the attack, which took place while he was off-duty, near the Aloha Club in Colquitt Street at about 03:15 GMT. He died shortly after.

Sir Jon said: "On behalf of everybody connected with Merseyside Police, I extend our heartfelt and sincere condolences to his wife Sarah and the rest of his family."
