Should charities pay celebrities to support them?

Barnardo's has admitted it paid around £3,000 to a woman who appears in the TV show Made in Chelsea, to help promote the children's charity.

The charity says the fee paid to Binky Felstead was to promote Barnardo's shops which it says are part of its trading arm and as such operate in a commercial environment.

The journalist Dame Esther Rantzen. who founded ChildLine. and more recently The Silver Line, a charity supporting older people, told the BBC's Radio 4 PM programme it was wrong of the charity to pay for celebrity support.

But Daniel Fluskey, head of Policy and Research at the Institute of Fundraising, a professional membership body for UK fundraising, says it can end up netting the charity more money.
