Generation 2015 profiles: Mel Ramsay
I'm 24, originally from near Liverpool. I studied journalism at Staffordshire University until 2013, and was then elected into the position of vice-president at my Students' Union. I re-ran, and was elected as president for this academic year.
I have not had a traditional upbringing; I ran away from home at the age of 15 and have been self-supporting ever since. I was homeless for a brief period, then on benefits for a few years, but always knew that I wanted to improve myself through education.
I feel that politics is for everyone, no matter where you come from. I actively encourage the student body to engage in democratic processes.
I am currently heading a general election campaign - and recently won £10,000 from the government to support this - as well as securing an on-campus polling booth for our students to use. Basically, I love politics.
