Alton Towers 999 call delay revealed

It has emerged that it took 11 minutes for the emergency services to be called to the Alton Towers theme park in Staffordshire after the rollercoaster crash on Tuesday.

The crash saw two carriages collide on the £18m ride, leaving people trapped 25ft (7.6m up) at an angle of 45 degrees for up to four-and-a-half hours.

Sixteen people were injured, four seriously, when the carriages on the Smiler ride collided at the theme park.

Alton Towers said it would remain shut on Friday while the Health and Safety Executive continues its investigation into the crash.
