Oliver Sacks on Desert Island Discs in 1994

British neurologist Oliver Sacks has died at the age of 82, it has been confirmed.

The acclaimed author, whose book Awakenings inspired a film of the same name, reportedly died of cancer at his home in New York.

In September 1994 he appeared on an episode of Radio 4's Desert Island Discs with Sue Lawley, in which he spoke about the impact music can have on the brain.
