Brit couple: 'Don't leave our baby in Indian orphanage’

A British couple whose surrogate daughter was born in India now face the prospect of leaving her in a Mumbai orphanage, because of UK government delays in processing her passport.

Chris and Michele Newman have been told by the Indian authorities they have to get travel documents in place by October 7th, if they want to travel back to the UK with their 3-month-old daughter, Lily.

Lily's dad Chris told BBC Radio 5 live's Adrian Chiles he is horrified at the prospect of not coming home with his daughter.

“I did have to do something no father had to - I was pacing around at 3am, looking at orphanages in the middle of Mumbai”.

The Home Office has said "The welfare of children is paramount in surrogacy cases. HM Passport Office needs to ensure that the child has a claim to British nationality, that surrogacy laws are adhered to, and that the child's best interests are protected."
