Catalan: EU would not survive direct Spanish rule

The European Union could "not tolerate" the imposition of direct rule by Madrid, the foreign affairs spokesman for the Catalan government has said.

Speaking to the Today programme Raul Romeva said: "How can the EU democracy survive and how can they be credible if they allow this to happen?"

"The people and the institutions in Catalonia will not let this happen," he said.
