Harry Shindler: Hid in a hole to survive German attack
Harry Shindler was conscripted into the Army and served in the North Africa campaign before taking part in the invasion of Italy.
He landed at Anzio and was responsible for an anti-tank gun emplacement as the Allied forces advanced northwards to liberate Rome.
After the war, Harry worked tirelessly to ensure that the memory of those who served in Italy were not forgotten.
Harry died in February 2023 at his home in Italy.
We Were There aims to collect as many first-hand accounts as possible by 2025, the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, to preserve veterans' accounts for future generations.
The BBC is currently working on the project with a number of partners including the Normandy Memorial Trust and Royal British Legion. Some of the stories collected may be shared with our partners and used on BBC News platforms.
