Groundwater supply fears voiced in south-east England

Experts have voiced fears over low groundwater levels on the eve of the hosepipe ban in Kent, Sussex and Surrey.

Seven water companies are introducing restrictions on water use, with domestic users facing fines of up to £1,000 for defying them.

About 70% of water in south-east England comes from underground.

However, experts have said the groundwater supply, which takes months to filter down through the chalk rock, is far below the level it should be.
