Woman wins £4m damages 45 years after oxygen-starved birth

A Kent woman has been awarded £4m in compensation 45 years after she was left with severe learning difficulties because of a hospital's mismanagement of her birth.

Susanne Turner, of Wittersham, near Tenterden, has needed constant care since her mother's caesarean section was botched at Buchanan Street Hospital, in St Leonards, Sussex, in 1967.

NHS South Eastern, the trust responsible for the now-closed hospital, has apologised to Ms Turner and her mother for the treatment they received.

She was awarded the compensation after a High Court hearing.

Ms Turner's parents applied for damages after reading of a similar case in a magazine 10 years ago.
