Railway investment 'urgently needed'

Rail enthusiast Pete Waterman said plans to invest £37bn in the country's network was urgently needed.

Mr Waterman - speaking on behalf of Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership, which is campaigning for improved rail links - told BBC Radio WM's Adrian Goldberg that the announcement made by Network Rail marked a U-turn on 60 years of cuts to the railways.

He said the country needed to accept that running a railway network "wasn't cheap" but "makes sense".

Describing the current railway network as "crumbling", Mr Waterman said many of the latest plans for investment should have been made in the 1950s.
