St Cuthbert statue is centrepiece of Gospels exhibition

A life-size sculpture of St Cuthbert has been commissioned as a major feature of the Lindisfarne Gospels exhibition at Durham University.

British artist Tim Chalk has created a striking contemporary interpretation of St Cuthbert which will form the centrepiece of the Gospels display.

Made of concrete, the statue depicts the saint staring up at an open hole in the top of his roofless tower, reflecting on nature.

Presenter Chris Connel witnesses the installation of the statue and talks to the artist about how he captured the spirituality of St Cuthbert.

The Lindisfarne Gospels are on display for the first time outside of London in over a decade from Monday, 1 July.

The Gospels - Good News 2013 is broadcast on Monday 1, July at 22:35 BST on BBC One North East and Cumbria and nationwide on the iPlayer thereafter.
