A&E staff's balancing act at Addenbrooke's Hospital

Julie Reinger spends 12 hours in Addenbrooke's Accident and Emergency department in Cambridgeshire.

She finds out from doctors and nurses what challenges they face and follows the stories of patients who have come for treatment.

Staff are presented with a range of challenges from drunken patients to those with minor injuries and primary care needs.

Doctor Rob Major, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, says that it is important to balance high standards of treatment whilst maintaining the tempo and speed with which patients are seen.
