Kent farmers voice fears as seasonal workers scheme ends

Farmers in Kent are concerned about who will pick their fruit when a scheme enabling non-EU eastern Europeans to do seasonal work in the UK comes to an end later this year.

Some fear those who normally spend up to six months picking the seasonal fruit crops will switch to full-time employment when restrictions on workers from Bulgaria and Romania are lifted.

And some predict an inevitable rise in the price of locally grown fruit and vegetables when the Seasonal Agricultural Workers scheme ends.

Yvette Austin reports.
