Migration pressure fears for school places

As Bulgaria and Romania prepare to become full members of the European Union on 1 January, the leader of Kent County Council (KCC) has said he is concerned about the effects of extra migration on the authority.

Paul Carter said further migration from Eastern Europe would increase pressure on schools, where KCC is making plans for an additional 400 places.

"There is very little money in the system to expand school places and I hope we don't have to revert to mobile classrooms and temporary accommodation," he said.

In West Sussex, there are fears that areas such as Crawley, where one third of pupils in some primary schools are from Eastern Europe, could face extra pressure.
