Corby shoppers flee scaffolding collapse

The Health and Safety Executive has said it was "sheer luck that no-one was seriously injured or killed" when scaffolding equipment fell in to Queen's Square in Corby.

Desborough Scaffolding Limited, of Desborough, was fined £16k and ordered to pay £4.6k in costs after pleading guilty to breaching safety regulations.

Northampton Magistrates' Court heard how netting attached to the metal poles acted as a sail in high winds, causing the structure to fall to the ground in August 2012.

Investigators found the scaffolding was not stable and that it had not been erected by a competent person.
