Flood farmers fear saving towns will cost them their crops

Communities could be forced to choose between protecting the countryside from flooding or protecting the towns, the Environment Agency has said.

It comes after flood warnings and flood alerts for stretches of the rivers Severn, Wye, Teme, Lugg and Vyrnwy in Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire.

Farmers in the region, who had relied on flood ditches dug years ago, said it was becoming impossible to protect their crops but further work could jeopardise flood defences in urban areas.
