Hartlepool's bombardment child stranded with bangers

Violet Muers was just seven years old when the German navy bombarded Hartlepool in 1914 during World War One.

She recalls how her husband-to-be had also been caught in the surprise attack. He had been sent out to get sausages from the butchers when the shells started falling.

When he got home, the family had fled into the countryside without waiting for him.

What did he do, Violet asked him? "I had a really good feed," came the reply.

Inside Out is broadcast on Monday, 24 February at 19:30 GMT on BBC One North East & Cumbria and nationwide for seven days thereafter on the iPlayer.
