Does the UK need a deer cull?

The population of wild deer in the UK is at its highest level since the last Ice Age.

Many landowners say that the animals are damaging woodlands and have become a danger to road users.

There are also 74,000 collisions between vehicles and deer every year resulting in hundreds of injuries and around 20 road deaths, according to The Deer Initiative.

So is a controversial deer cull now necessary?

Animal rights campaigners are opposed to the idea of a national deer cull and say statistics relating to high deer numbers are wrong.

BBC Inside Out cameras follow a deer cull on a private estate in the East Midlands and we find out why some experts believe the countryside is being overrun by these animals.
