Meet the 83-year-old worker who cannot retire

Millions of people of working age in the UK are living without any private or company pension.

Despite all the warnings and government initiatives, many workers are not taking out a pension or cannot afford one.

One third of households in the north-east of England have no private pension according to the latest government statistics.

BBC Inside Out meets 83-year-old Charles West who says he cannot afford to retire after a career in sales where he was never able to save enough for his retirement.

He works in a call centre in Sunderland where he is the oldest employee. Charles explains why he is still working and advises young people to build up a pension before it is too late.

Inside Out North East & Cumbria is broadcast on BBC One England on Monday, 15 September at 19:30 BST and nationwide on the iPlayer seven days thereafter.
