Nostalgic films showing everyday British life go online

Thousands of films depicting life in Britain over 100 years have been made available to the public online.

The project, Britain on Film by the British Film Institute (BFI), provides a social history of everyday life and much of it will be free to access.

The BFI said 10,000 film and TV titles from 1895 to the present day will be digitised by 2017 thanks to National Lottery funding and the support of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

This montage of footage, which is courtesy of Britain on Film available at BFI Player, external, includes: holidaymakers at Butlins in Clacton, 1946; a wedding in Felixstowe, 1935; "The Saturday Men" about West Bromwich Albion, 1963; "Bottom of the list" in Wolverhampton, 1968; a profile of the Yorkshire Post; a village fire in Essex, 1914; and visitors to the seaside in Margate, 1930.
