York Minster window gets major renovation

Phase one of an extensive renovation project of the East Front of York Minster has been completed.

Craftspeople have spent the past seven years, and millions of pounds, restoring the Great East Window, the biggest medieval stained glass window in Europe - it is 24 metres tall, and the size of a tennis court, with 311 panes.

The stonework is also being renewed, with the project due to be completed in 2018.

The window itself was completed in 1408 by glazier John Thornton.

It has been restored with the help of senior conservator at York Glaziers Trust, Nick Teed.
