Guinea Pig Club: Memorial plan for WW2 airmen

Some 649 airmen who suffered terrible burn injuries underwent pioneering plastic surgery during World War Two.

They became known as the Guinea Pig Club after being treated by surgeon Archibald McIndoe at his clinic in Sussex.

Just 18 "guinea pigs" are still alive and now a permanent tribute to the club is to be set up at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
