Women's Army Auxiliary Corps commemorations

One hundred years ago, women were able to join the armed forces - with the creation of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps.

A special service was held at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to mark the centenary.

Fifty-eight thousand women served in the corps before it was disbanded in 1921.

Eighty-two women died in service, and five were awarded the Military Medal.

Charlotte Webb, who was originally from Ludlow but now lives in Worcestershire, said: "We were at war. We felt we needed to do something."
