Newbury Bypass: 20 years on

January 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the start of the Newbury Bypass clashes, a fight between eco-warriors and police that caught the attention of a nation.

Protesters chained themselves to trees in an effort to block the clearance of approximately 360 acres (150 ha) of land including 120 acres (49 ha) of woodland, and the felling of nearly 10,000 mature trees to make way for the construction of the road.

Twenty years on Lord Blair, the former commissioner of the Metropolitan Police who was in charge of the policing operation, reflects on the event, and the under sheriff of Berkshire Nick Blandy is reunited with demonstrator Philip Pritchard.
