Watch: Thames Valley floods explained in 60 seconds

A leading meteorologist has explained why the Thames Valley has seen extensive flooding over the past week.

Liz Bentley, chief executive of the Royal Meteorological Society and a professor of meteorology at the University of Reading, said climate change, as well as heavy rain, was a factor.

She explained that as the Earth's climate warms, more frequent and more intense weather events can be expected.

This is because warmer air holds more moisture, its concentration of water vapour increases and therefore flooding is likely to occur more often.

BBC South weather presenter Alexis Green met Prof Bentley on the banks of the River Thames where water levels have reached record levels.
