Primark baby: Crowd cheers to welcome Birmingham birth

Money was thrown and crowds cheered as a woman gave birth to a girl outside a Primark store in Birmingham city centre.

The woman, who was shielded by blankets during the birth, waved and thanked onlookers as she was taken into an ambulance with her baby.

West Midlands Police said an Australian doctor passing by, who was visiting Birmingham, delivered the infant.

The woman was shopping when she suddenly went into labour, said her friend Charlene. "It was absolutely amazing," she added.

Sgt Sarah Chater, from West Midlands Police, announced the birth on New Street.

She said: "It was a lovely moment, we turned to crowd and said it was a baby girl and a big cheer went up."

Both mother and baby are well, police said.
