Former Wimbledon champion says her BBC win was 'quite a surprise’

Former Wimbledon singles champion Ann Jones says she did not think she would win BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1969 and expected to lose to golfer Tony Jacklin.

Jones followed up her Centre Court victory over Billie Jean King in July by landing the BBC trophy after a public vote.

She told BBC Midlands Today's Mary Rhodes: "I didn't expect to win it because Tony Jacklin won The Open golf in the same year so I went along very relaxed.

"When my name was announced it was actually quite a surprise."

Jones, who has lived all her life in Birmingham, spent 13 years in the world top 10, and won three Grand Slam titles - including two French Opens.

The 2016 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award will be announced at Birmingham's Genting Arena on Sunday evening on BBC One.

BBC Midlands Today will be live on the red carpet as sporting stars arrive at the event from 17:00 GMT. You can watch that via the red button on any BBC television channel, or on the BBC News Channel.
