Peterborough hospital trust finances 'unsustainable'

The trust which runs Peterborough City Hospital is financially unsustainable, according to a new report by NHS watchdog Monitor.

Last year the Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust needed a £44m bail-out from the Department of Health to meet the cost of financing Peterborough City Hospital, built with a private funding initiative.

The new report by Monitor says the trust is facing a shortfall of £40m a year for the next five years.

It says the trust is clinically sound but without further support it will be unable to pay its bills, including wages.
