Reopening the Wisbech rail line 'a strategic priority'

Reopening the railway line to Wisbech is "a strategic priority", the transport minister Stephen Hammond told a special rail summit held in Westminster.

The meeting, organised by north-east Cambridgeshire MP Steve Barclay on Tuesday, discussed plans to reopen the eight-mile line.

It was last used in 1968 and if reopened would link a new station in Wisbech to March.

Mr Barclay said the scheme, which could cost up to £50m, is "key to the regeneration of Wisbech" and would help promote growth and the wealth of Cambridge into the Fens.
