Harold Wilson's affection for the Isles of Scilly

The former Prime Minister Harold Wilson had a deep affection for the Isles of Scilly where he had a holiday home.

He may have been a Yorkshire-man but his heart arguably lay in the wild seas off the western tip of Cornwall.

Mr Wilson would often escape to the tranquility of the islands during his years in power.

When the Torrey Canyon disaster struck in 1967, leading to 119,000 tons of oil polluting the sea, Mr Wilson set up a press conference at RNAS Culdrose near Helston to deal with the disaster.

He died in 1995 and was buried on the Isles of Scilly.
