Single-handed success for Cornish sailor Sam Goodchild

A yachtsman from Cornwall has been celebrating the highest ever finish by a British skipper in the Solitaire Du Figaro single-handed yacht race off the French coast.

Sam Goodchild, from Falmouth, finished the race in 11th place at the weekend.

Mr Goodchild's training partner Henry Bomby, from Dartmouth in Devon, finished in 24th place.

The two skippers are now preparing to compete in the Fastnet race which starts on 10 August.

The 608 nautical miles (1,126 km) non-stop race starts from Cowes, Isle of Wight and travel to Plymouth, via the Fastnet Rock, off the southern tip of Ireland.
