Stratford-upon-Avon stages WWI football Christmas truce

A new play has been commissioned to commemorate the Christmas football match between opposing sides of World War One.

The depiction of the temporary truce will be performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire.

Playwright Phil Porter visited the trenches in Flanders, which he said forced him to think about how he would have coped.

"I'm sure I would have fallen apart very quickly with a mixture of discomfort and fear," he said.
