Salmon quota 'will end' Solway Firth haaf netters

Haaf netters - fishermen who use a method inherited from the Vikings - fear a fresh restriction on the number of fish they can catch will end their trade on the Solway Firth.

The Environment Agency is proposing new rules which would mean the fishermen can only keep three salmon a year instead of the current 10.

The agency said this is to protect the "dangerously low" fish population, but the fishermen say it could well end 1,000 years of haaf netting in the area.
