Remembering the Lonsdale Pals on the Somme anniversary
Among the thousands of British casualties on the first morning of the Battle of the Somme were hundreds recruited from towns and villages across what is now Cumbria.
They had joined the 11th Battalion of the Border Regiment, otherwise known as the Lonsdale Pals, after the Earl of Lonsdale issued a rallying cry for volunteers.
Memories of their bravery and their service can still be seen across the county, as BBC Look North found out.
