Residents fight to stop swimming in toxic quarry

Residents living near a "blue lagoon" in Derbyshire have been fighting to stop people swimming in the toxic water.

Councillor Caitlin Bisknell, from High Peak Council, said their test showed the water at the disused quarry at Harpur Hill, in Buxton, has an alkaline level similar to bleach.

Phil Baker, who lives nearby, said it has become a beauty spot for hundreds of visitors, causing "gridlock" at times and could create problems for emergency services wanting to get to houses.

The borough council and county council have been calling for it to be filled, but have been unsuccessful contacting the owners.
