100-year-old D-Day veteran surprised with Legion D'honneur
A D-Day veteran who marked his 100th birthday with a skydive has been given a surprise honour for his role in liberating France.
Great-grandfather Verdun Hayes, from north Devon, has been awarded the Legion d'honneur, France's highest decoration.
He had just returned from Normandy to pay his last respects to those who died when he received a surprise visit from the French Consul, Alain Sibiril.
In April the Somerset-born centenarian did a skydive to raise money for the North Devon Hospice.
