National Trust marks 50 years of Brownsea Island ownership

The National Trust has been marking 50 years of its ownership of Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour.

The 1.5 mile (2.4 km) long and 0.75 mile (1.2 km) wide island is famous for its red squirrels and as the location for Lord Baden Powell's inaugural Scouts camp in 1907.

A succession of previous owners had all left their mark on Brownsea in different ways.

The island is now a dedicated nature conservation area and was gifted to the National Trust 50 years ago by reclusive private owner Mary Bonham-Christie.
