Essex maternity units close over midwives shortage

Hospital directors have decided to shut two maternity units in Essex and transfer staff to Colchester Hospital.

The decision, which affects units at Clacton and Harwich, was taken because of concern about a shortage of midwives at Colchester. The two units will be closed until at least June.

One mother-to-be, who found out about the closures through Facebook, said she was shocked.
