Coryton refinery chimneys and towers demolished

At over 90m (300ft) tall, almost as high as Big Ben, a chimney at the former Coryton oil refinery on the Thames has been demolished.

On a clear day it could be seen from as far away as the Dartford Crossing.

A second, taller chimney - at 110m (367ft) - is being retained to create a landmark which recognises the history of the site, near Canvey Island.

Andrew Owens, chief executive of Greenergy, said developers plan to create an enterprise park on the land and already have the support of Thurrock Council.

"We are now moving onto the next stage, to prepare detailed planning applications to allow us to put in place the infrastructure that new businesses will need on site," he said.

Two oil distilling columns were also demolished.
