Spurn Point lighthouse revamp work gets under way

Work on a £500,000 scheme to revamp a derelict lighthouse on a nature reserve in East Yorkshire is under way.

The lighthouse at Spurn Point Nature Reserve has stood empty since it stopped operating in 1985.

According to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, which manages the site, visitor numbers to the reserve have dropped from about 70,000 a year to just under 40,000 since the area was damaged by flooding caused by the tidal surge on 5 December 2013.

It is hoped a new visitor centre in the Grade II listed building, which was built in the 1890s, will encourage more people to the area.
