Campaign over Kent street lights fails

A campaigner who collected more than 11,000 signatures demanding street lights are turned back on in Kent has lost her fight after councillors voted against the move.

Part-night lighting was introduced in 2010 with about half of Kent's 120,000 lights turned off. Campaigners opposed it amid fears of a rise in crime, but the council said crime had not risen.

Kent County Council last month agreed to turn them on in a £40m three-year scheme using cheaper LED technology, but campaigner Tina Brooker wanted it done straight away.
