Rare giraffe born at Port Lympne animal reserve

A female giraffe has taken her first steps at an animal park in Kent.

The Rothschild calf is the first to be born at Port Lympne Reserve in eight years.

Keepers said the giraffe, born on 26 July, was part of a breeding programme designed to protect the species. Only about 750 are thought to remain in the wild.

The park's animal manager Simon Jeffery said: "We managed to capture the first moments on CCTV. Watching the footage back, we can see that the little one was trying to stand up shortly after birth, just as she would in the wild."
