Nigel Evans MP case: CPS head defends prosecution

The head of the Crown Prosecution Service in the North West of England has defended the decision to put the MP Nigel Evans on trial.

The former Commons Deputy Speaker was cleared of all nine charges against him on Thursday, which included rape and sexual assault.

Three of the seven alleged victims said during the trial they had not wanted Mr Evans to be prosecuted.

The Chief Crown Prosecutor for the North West, Nazir Afzal, said: "We don't care who the complainant is, we don't care who's being complained against, we look at the evidence."
